OSHA Issues Guidance for Silica

July 29, 2019

OSHA issues “Frequently Asked Questions” guidance document for Crystalline Silica Standard for General Industry (29 CFR 1910.1053)

Key Highlights:

  1. Workplace is NOT exempt if it relies primarily on engineering controls to minimize exposures.  This is due to potential/anticipated failure of engineering controls.
  2. Employer does NOT have to develop a formal Exposure Control Plan if they can provide objective documentation that exposures are regularly below the Action Level of 25 ug/m3.
  3. Dose NOT automatically exempt short term exposures unless objective data shows that exposures are regularly below 25 ug/m3.
